Halle Berry joins the ranks of international celebrities who have been flaunting the desi look Indian fans of Halle Berry, 45, are in for a pleasant surprise. The first extended trailer of Cloud Atlas, Berry’s upcoming sci-fi film with Tom Hanks, shows the Oscar-winning actor in a bright red sari.
Dressed in traditional Indian attire, complete with glass bangles and mehndi on her hands, Berry looks every inch a new Indian bride.
The trailer was released to much excitement among fans of the epic drama based on a 2004 novel by the same name, written by British author David Mitchell. The novel consists of six stories that take the reader from remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. The film, written and directed by The Matrix creators Lana and Andy Wachowski, also stars Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant, and is scheduled for an October 26 release. The film contains stories set in a different time and place, and it is being speculated that Berry plays an Indian character in one.
In the recent past, international celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Paris Hilton and Lady Gaga have been seen flaunting a sari, inspiring French luxury label Hermes to launch an entire range of the six-yard Indian wonder. “It’s great that international stars have taken to sporting a sari. It’s not just a promotion of our dress but also makes these stars a big talking point,” says filmmaker Anil Sharma. “But do young women in India enjoy wearing a sari?” asks filmmaker Alankrita Shrivastav.
