I’ve never talked so much before: Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui says he can act without hesitation in front of the camera, but interviews give him stage fright!

The country may have finally taken notice of Nawazuddin Siddiqui's acting prowess after the success
of Gangs Of Wasseypur, but the actor still gets very uncomfortable during interviews and promotions. He's never been too involved in promoting a film before Gangs... anyway, and while the cast of the film wore gamchas and danced on the streets, Nawaz hung around in the background, trying to avoid talking too much. But that's not just because he's reserved, he says, it's because he has a severe case of stage fright. And with the second part of the film slated to release soon, he might have to go through this ordeal all over again.
"I've never been so involved in the promotions of a film. Pehle logo ne zarurat nahi samjhi kyunki mujhe koi khaas jaanta toh hai nahi, isliye kisi ne interest dikhaya nahi tha promotions ke liye. In this film, they think I am required to be there toh shayad le rahe hain. I was part of all the promotions. When everybody wore a gamchha and danced on the streets, I was there.Gamchha maine bhi pehna tha, dance nahi kiya tha, haath hila diya tha bas," he says.I’ve never talked so much before: Nawazuddin Siddiqui

It took a lot of cajoling from director Anurag Kashyap to get him to do all this. "Main aasani se toh nahi mana tha. Mere se yeh question answer hote nahi hain. Mere se acting kara lo par mujhe ye question answer bahut bhari pad gaye is baar. But the good thing about Anurag is that he gives you a lot of space and lets you be. Usne mujhse kaha ki tujhe jaise lage tu waise bolna, kharab lage kharab bolna," he says.

But why is it that Nawaz can face the camera without any hesitation but can't give an interview without being nervous? "I don't know, thoda sa mushkil pad jaata hai. During a performance, you're so involved with the character and I enjoy that a lot. That is entirely different. I can work but I can't do all this. I have stage fright. Taking a mic and talking on the stage is the scariest thing for me. Acting karna doosri baat hai, logo ke saamne baatein karne mein darr lagta hai. But then I didn't feel scared in front of the French media in Cannes. There I would say something in Hindi, and they would translate it. That wasn't so scary at all, but here it is," he tells us.
And then there's the other reason. Nawaz says that sometimes he feels that he's said something entirely foolish in front of people. "Kabhi kabhi mehsoos hota hai ki main kitni badi bewakoofi wali baatein kar raha hoon. Thoda sa bewakoof aadmi hoon, aisa kya bol raha hoon. Par itni baatein maine kabhi nahi ki hongi jitni Gangs... ke promotion ke liye ki hain," he says
